“What is a Unit OIC?
Marine Strike Group (MSG) – The smallest unit in the SFMC is the Marine Strike Group or MSG. These units are attached to a chapter. The size of which varies considerably depending on the location & membership. This means an MSG can consist of a single Marine, or dozens. The Marine in command of the MSG, or any SFMC unit, is referred to as the Officer in Charge (OIC), their second in command is usually termed the Deputy Officer in Charge (DOIC) & if they have noncommissioned Officer overseeing other enlisted, then the leadership will also have an NCOIC. The OIC, DOIC & NCOIC all need to be part of the parent STARFLEET chapter.

Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) – MEU’s are SFMC units that are not attached to chapters. They either form organically this way or sometimes a STARFLEET chapter leaves STARFLEET, but its Strike Group wishes to stay. As with the Strike Group, the Marine in command of the expeditionary unit is referred to as the Officer in Charge, and their second in command is usually termed the Deputy Officer in Charge. Note, however, that the OIC of a MEU must not be a member of any STARFLEET chapter. The members of the unit, like members of any unit, may come from anywhere in the STARFLEET Marine Corps.” -SFMC-MFM, version 1-001-2026, s.03:02 Units, p. 08.

What is the mission of the SFMC?
“The STARFLEET Marine Corps (SFMC) is a department of STARFLEET International (SFI) focused on providing a venue for those members expressing an interest in the military science fiction aspects of Star Trek fandom.

The SFMC is open to all life forms regardless of race, color, creed, disability, gender or lifestyle. The SFMC is dedicated to fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie for its members, promoting service to the community and charity, especially to those who have served and those currently serving in their respective nation’s armed forces.” -SFMC-MFM, version 1-001-2026, 01:01 Our Mission, p. 04.

The role of SFMC?
Within STARFLEET, the SFMC is a permanent auxiliary department whose members include veterans and active duty military as well as people who prefer a military science fiction theme to their Star Trek fan activities. The SFMC is organized along traditional military lines in the same manner as STARFLEET, however, instead of being organized along naval lines, and using terms such as ships and shuttles, the SFMC uses ground force equivalents, such as brigades and strike groups. Despite our use of military structure and terminology, the SFMC is in NO WAY a military or paramilitary organization.

Members of the SFMC are dedicated to the same principles as other members of STARFLEET like community service and charity fundraising. Because so many of our members associate with, or have ties to, the real-world military, much of our focus is on organizations that associate or assist military members, veterans, and their families.” -SFMC-MFM, version 1-001-2026, 02:03 Why role play STARFLEET Marines?, p. 05.
